You’ve probably heard a lot about homeopathy, but you know already what it is?
Although it may seem a modern invention, it is true that homeopathy is an invention of today. Nothing is further from reality, it is said that the idea occurred to the German doctor Samuel Hahnemann in the early nineteenth century.
It is a pseudoscience that is not based on scientific method and that emerged in opposition to traditional medicine of the time. Its fundamental premise is that any evil that affects a human being can be countered by a stronger condition, but similar. “I like cures like” could be defined as its basic principle.
Homeopathy has been and remains a much debated specialty. On one side are doctors who cling to the idea that homeopathy acts as a placebo on the sick. On the other hand, specialists are convinced that homeopathic therapies really help patients, dramatically improving their physical or mental.
The main problem presented is that homeopathy has never been proven scientifically to be effective and therefore, is often recommended to patients who want this type of treatment that use it as a complement to conventional medicine, never as a substitute thereof.
It is typically used primarily to treat chronic diseases such as allergies, respiratory or digestive problems, bone and joint problems, sore throat, flu or hormonal changes.
Homeopathic treatments are plant and animal origin, presented in the form of liquids or pills. What they do basically is naturally stimulate the body’s healing forces. These small doses of substances that help the body to react to external agents, but managed in an exaggerated way, make people sick.
